How often should you spray your Trico deer repellent to protect trees, shrubs and garden plants?

How often do I need to spray Trico® deer repellent spray?

Firstly, we need to differentiate between the two formulations of Trico deer deterrent spray. We have a garden version, Trico Garden, and a commercial / standard version, Trico Pro. The garden version dries clear and so will not stain plants – this is for aesthetic purposes as no one wants white stains on their prize roses!  The commercial version will produce a white stain on the trees and shrubs sprayed so that sprayers can see which areas have already been treated. Both versions use the same active ingredient.

Find Trico Garden here and Trico Pro here.

The other difference is that the standard version is more rainfast than the garden version. As such, normally only two treatments per year are required. It will remain effective even if it rains heavily.

The Trico Garden version may need to be sprayed more often especially if it is particularly rainy. Even so, it is unlikely that more than 3 or 4 applications per year will be required,  once a month during the growing season to protect new growth and maybe once during autumn and winter (just depending on how active the deer are).

The best time to spray Trico is in spring and early summer to deter browsing as new shoots start to emerge and then again in autumn. This protects against winter browsing as other food sources become more scarce for deer and deer tend to roam further seeking food. Some customers will spray in Winter too depending again on how active deer are.

With the garden version, if weather is bad and rain may have washed off the Trico, then a supplemental treatment in each season may be required to give full protection.

So, all in all it’s a relatively light treatment programme with just a few applications per year. You certainly don’t need to be spraying every few weeks, just sit back and enjoy thriving trees, shrubs, flowers and plants!
